Cold Sores / Herpes Simplex 1
Herpes simplex 1 (HSV1) is one of 5 types of human herpes viruses. Once contracted, the virus remains
in the body for life; however with time the body becomes more efficient at suppressing it. Most of the time the virus will remain in a dormant state, where it will not be contagious. The virus
becomes active when the body's immune system is weakened, whether from stress, disease, or environmentally related factors.
Other than being inconvenient, the virus can only become serious if it is transmitted to the eyes where blindness can result. It is especially important to keep the hands clean after contact with the lesions to keep the virus from spreading. HSV1 results in cold sores on the mouth, eyes, or nose. It is normally contracted by kissing or sharing a utensil containing the moist saliva of an infected person.
Early warning signs that an outbreak is about to occur, is a numbing or tingling sensation around the mouth,
which may last for a day or two before the blister appears. Within 48 hours the blister ruptures and once a scab has formed it will usually healin 5 to 7 days.
MSM is a nutritional mineral sulfur compound that can help normalize the body's immune system. MSM can
be taken orally in powder, capsule, or tablet form and is also available in a moisturizing cream, lotion and cold sore solution for topical use. We have found that MSM should be taken orally at a minimum of 1 teaspoon per day to achieve the best possible results. For painful conditions such as joint pain, muscle pain, skin irritations, or cold sores, a topical cream or solution should be used along with the powder supplement.
